New stuff on my desk.

It’s been a while since I wrote anything worthy on here, and looking at my desk got me thinking about the few new bits of hardware that I have been using a lot recently that was money well spent.

Synology Cube Station CS407 4-Bay Sata Gigabit Network

I have had the Synology Cube Station now for about 3 months. I have had a few problems with dodgy hard disks, which to be fair have not been caused by the CS407. This NAS is incredible, quick and has a plethora of extras thrown in for good measures;

Google warning.

I was doing a search for N-gage in Google, and noticed that Google is actually warning us of sites that may harm our computers. How clever is that?

If one clicks into the link, there is another page with a warning, and you can go one step further and actually see why Google say it may be harmful. This is exactly why I like Google so much. Over time I would imagine they will be able to tell us all sites that are malicious or contain viruses or spyware.

Listening to LastFM on your S60 phone!

There is this great new application called Mobbler, that allows you to login to LastFM account on your mobile and to stream music. The set up is pretty basic and it worked very well provided there was signal.

I tried it out on the train this morning, and it was not as reliable as I had hoped. Once it loses connection, you have to manually reconnect. (Lets hope this gets changed in newer versions as it is a right pain if your phone is buried in your pocket).

Overall I like where they are going with this application and would highly recommend using it!

Note: you need to have an account on LastFM before trying to use this application. You can sign up here.

Cat vs Toilet.

Now that Jo is in Nice, I have the house to myself, and my first port of call was the bathroom, where I have LIFTED THE TOILET SEAT. The feeling of power, that I was in control was incredible. 😉

Obviously if you are a single male and live with other males in a house (house share or you are gay or whatever) then this is not normally a problem, but being married to woman who insists the seat must be down at all times, this is a life problem.

In our house, we have an added concern in the way of Whiskey and Tamsin, our two Tonkinese cats. Jo seems to think they will fall in and drown in the 3 centimetres of water. LOL!

Anyway, for the next two weeks, I am going to prove that having the toilet seat up is not going to result in a drowned cat. Sadly though this will not help my cause when Jo gets back, as she will insist the seat stays down for other reasons.

Wine versus Water – Thanks Ben!

To my friends who enjoy a glass of wine or a pint of beer… and those who don’t.

As Ben Franklin once said: “In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in water there are bacteria“.

In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated that if we drink 1 litre of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than 1 kilo of Escherichia coli, (E. Coli) – bacteria  found in faeces. In other words, we are consuming 1 kilo of poop.

However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer (or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.

Remember: Water = Poop     Wine = Health

Therefore, it’s better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink water and be full of shit.

There is no need to thank me for this valuable information:  I’m doing this as a public service.

Thanks Mom for the email. I’ll remember this when drinking my beer.

Bowen’s off to Nice to learn French.

That is Jo Bowen of course! There can only be one mad Bowen in the family. To think we have lived in England for the past 9 years, watched the rivalry between England and France and now she wants to communicate with them in their own language….. “Femme Fou“.

Jo will be staying in Nice with a host family and going to a local school in the city. I believe she booked the trip through Apple Languages who specialize in this sort of thing.

I wish her all the best…

Which means, I am a free man for the next two weeks. So friends and colleagues, if you want to meet up after work,  go out for a drink or three, or have dinner or just a chat then from this coming Monday to the 22nd of August, I am all yours.

Have a good time Jo, stay safe, enjoy the lovely weather, relax, rest, and come back speaking like a true French woman.

P.S. I hope you have left instructions for the cats, dishwasher, washing machine, vacuum cleaner, cooker, iron, kettle etc.
