Why buy a portable GPS navigation system?

October 31, 2005

While driving home tonight I pulled up alongside this car and there on the dashboard was a Tom Tom, with a map showing the road ahead. Ok, I guess they are a good idea, but it got me thinking, why use a Tom Tom when you are driving to and from work? I see this chap everyday on the same stretch of road. Surely after one trip there and back he would know the route.

Ridiculously expensive and for what?

And it’s not as if there are multiple routes to work, for instance where we live, there is only one or two ways into work, so a Tom Tom would be a waste.

The only time I would say they would be useful, was if one went on a long distance trip, but even then, the whole fun of driving is finding your way, looking up place names on a map, getting lost, all of which is a damm side better than letting some computer tell you where to go. sure give these devices to women, who don’t know their arse from their elbow, but for men to admit they can’t drive without a Tom Tom is disgraceful and pathetic.

But do they really work? Your comments or views on this topic will be more than welcome.

I know of two examples where friends of mine have typed in the postal code of the destination, and then have had to stop and ask for directions. Ha Ha, that must have been embarressing.

I doubt I will ever buy a GPS navigation system (unless someone buys one for me, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” - That’s an idiom people), because who needs one when you have a live person sitting next to you, who can look at a map and tell you where to go, and two how can anyone justify the ridiculous prices these things go sell for?

No wicked weasel women were hurt in writing this article… If you don’t know what I am talking about, then you have not read the above article.

Are we British enough?

October 31, 2005

British test as of today.

So as of tomorrow if you are applying for British Naturalization, you have to sit a “Britishness Test“. A word used on the Sky news website, but is actually not even a real word. (look it up, if you don’t believe me).

As you may have gathered, Jo and I are going to have to do this silly test, not that it’s a problem, but it’s ridiculous and a complete waste of money. That is all it is, another way of getting money out of hard working foreigners. We have been living and working in England for over six years, and now have to prove we know British history and custom. We probably know more about Britain than some of the people who have lived here all their lives.

I mean, you just have to watch “Who wants to be a millionaire?“, to see the dumb idiots who don’t even know who Sir Winston Churchhill was or what he did?

Oh! well, they can give us their silly test, and we will pay our hard earned money, and I am quite sure we will pass. :-)

I will be producing the midnight hour of Jimmy Franks Late Show on BBC
WM
and BBC Coventry and Warwickshire in England this week (26th-28th
October).

I found your website www.stuffonmydesk.com and wondered if you would
be willing to have a chat with Jimmy about it around quarter past/half
past midnight (BST) on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday morning? It
would be a light-hearted interview and last about 10 minutes; It could
be done by phone or ISDN.

Please confirm if you would be willing to do this and if so, let me
have a contact number for you.

Thanks

Sue James

What do you do when you go shopping for a bed?

October 26, 2005

You try out every bed in the shop to see if it’s comfortable. Take a look at what these folk did, when they tried out the following bed. Click the funny bed video to save or open. (File Size: 2.75MB).

Log me in..

October 24, 2005

Log me in.com

I was told about this cool package called Logmein.com
Access your home or work computer from any web-enabled device, including a laptop or pocket PC - for true mobility, freedom and flexibility.

Visit customers, go on vacation or go home early and still have total control of your computer as if you were sitting in front of it.

Some other features of the PAY package are:

  • Remote Control
Fully control the mouse and keyboard of any remote PC from a web browser.
  • File Manager
Securely access, transfer and backup important files and folders.
  • File Share
Easily share files - even those that are too large for email.
  • The only problem I have with this package is the price of $69.95 per year per machine.

Are these guys on the herb?

There are other excellent packages such as RealVNC or Remote Administrator and they offer similar features for free.

BUT, after using it tonight to access my web server on another machine, and my work PC in another county, I must say it is pretty damm amazing, fast as hell, in fact it is faster than Ultra VNC and to date that is all I have used. So I will be using the free edition of logmein.com, which allows remote control only and Ultra VNC for file transfer.

    15 years on…

    October 20, 2005

    Crappy old floppy disks.
It’s fifteen years this month since LucasFilm Games released "The secret of Monkey Island". I remember sitting around my next door neighbours Intel 80286XT, with it’s 16 colour cga monitor, 640kb RAM and 20MB hard drive. :-) The game was really exciting and you had to click on different parts of the screen to find out things so you could progress to the next screen. Very basic in today’s terms, but never the less an excellent game. It had cool funky music, which I think can be found on some nokia phones as a ringtone.
