Shopping Online!

I have always wondered what it would be like to have ones own shop online, something like Amazon or Ebay, so I decided to try one out myself and many thanks to Ray, a friend of mine, who suggested I look at osCommerce, and open source online shop e-commerce solution that is available for free under the GNU General Public License.

It features a rich set of out-of-the-box online shopping cart functionality that allows store owners to setup, run, and maintain their online stores with minimum effort and with no costs, license fees, or limitations involved. And I tell you, it took just under an hour to set it all up and figure out the security and paths only because I am relatively new to debian and the linux command prompt. Anyway it is now up and running over at http://shop.lookatbowen.com. I have so far changed the front page and will soon had some content (haven’t quite decided what I am going to sell yet .

Where did the week go?

Friday already!, another week gone and almost another month gone. Someone stop the clock. Nothing much has been happening in Bowen’s world. Work is very quiet surprisingly, which is a good thing because no one wants to do work on a Friday.

Someone sent me a great link to a web site called Bombay TV. It’s very clever and corny, which is just what the Bollywood movies are. The idea is that you select a scene and then enter in the subtitles. You only have to do three subtitles and then run the film. You must give it a try. The site emails you the link once you are done. Here are a couple I found funny by Crazyfool, James, Asif, Asif(2).

So tonight is the big night for the EuroMillion draw. It’s estimated that the winner will take home 100 000 000 pounds. That is a hell of a lot money to win in one shot. Just imagine what you could do with all that cash? On sky news they mentioned the winner would match the riches of the Osborne Family (as if any one cares how much money those freaks have), but you could do a lot with that sort of money. I would certainly buy a small island somewhere in the carribean, preferably near Sir Richard Branson, so that we could hob nob with the rich and famous. I would also buy a red ferrari and couple of houses around the world. As to working for someone else. Ha Ha Ha!

 
Extra Note added on Saturday 28th of January 2006: It’s incredible to think that no one won the jackpot last night. Next week the jackpot is a staggering £125 000 000.

The site is changing big time!

For those observant enough, our site is in the process of changing in a big way. As this process takes time, it will look a bit strange for a while. Please be patient or click on the links and let us know what you think via the comments or contact us link.

What a week, that is all I can say!

Last Saturday I messed up something major on my Linux Server (Ubuntu). Don’t quite know what, but it screwed up everything, so I basically had to format the server. Not wanting to put Ubuntu back on, (once bitten), I decided to try out some other packages, so I tried FreeBSD. A big thank you to Mark Lindley for all his help, but I just found that package to be overwhelming and frustrating.  So in the end I installed Debian and have been fine tuning it for the past two days. I still haven’t figured it out, but have managed to get all my websites up and running much to my surprise.

And all the plugins that didn’t want to run on Ubuntu are running and running well on Debian. (So I guess, a big thank you to Gino Henry for his help on Debian). So, there is still a fair bit of work, especially on the Galleries, which aren’t working at the moment.

Spellchecker is now working, so no more excuses for spelling mistakes.

New “voice chat” feature proposed for mobile phones.

Your mobile phone takes photos and video clips, plays music, receives and sends email, browses the Web, has a PDA with WiFi and Bluetooth built in and, of course, does text and picture messaging. But engineers at Nokia have proposed yet another feature to be added: “voice chat.”

“The idea is that you can ‘call up‘ anyone who also has a ‘voice-chat‘-enabled mobile and quickly have a real-time two-way conversation, instead of tapping your way through short text messages back and forth,” says Nokia engineer Orkut Voivitunvittu.

Phone companies have desperately searched for new services to offer to offset the huge licensing fees for the 3G mobile data radio bands. The unexpected success of SMS text messaging helped the bottom line tremendously, but the search for the “next SMS” has been long and arduous.
